Everything You Need to Know
Seasons
Dry season (Dec–Apr): Best weather, busiest period — book early. Peak retreat months are January–March.
Green/rainy season (May–Nov): Lush landscape, fewer crowds, lower prices. Rain is typically afternoon showers, not all-day — good for smaller, intimate retreats.
Shoulder months (Nov, Apr): Best value — good weather with lower demand.
Note: The Caribbean coast has a different rain pattern than the Pacific. Always check regional forecasts.
Getting Here
San José (SJO) is the main international gateway — most flights connect through Miami, Houston, or New York.
San José → Puerto Viejo: approx. 4.5 hours by shuttle or car via Ruta 32 (Caribbean Highway).
Shuttle companies (Interbus, Caribe Shuttle) run daily departures from San José. Book 48h in advance for groups.
Nearest regional airport: Limón (LIO) — limited commercial service, mainly domestic.
Group tip: Charter a private van from SJO for groups of 8+. More comfortable and cost-effective than multiple shuttles.
What to Bring
- Rain gear: lightweight packable rain jacket (essential May–Nov)
- Insect repellent (DEET or natural), reef-safe sunscreen
- Cash in USD and Colones — ATMs in Puerto Viejo, limited elsewhere
- Universal power adapter (Costa Rica uses US-style plugs, 110V)
- Basic first-aid kit for remote venues
- Reusable water bottle — tap water is safe in most areas
- Light layers for evening (it cools down, especially at higher elevations)
- Yoga/retreat gear: mats and props available locally but limited for large groups — bring your own if possible
